Math Test Format

The general format of math tests will be as follows:

Knowledge & Understanding (35%)

1-3 pages of questions with specific instructions (e.g., factor, simplify, state restrictions).  For most textbooks, these would be represented by section 'A' practise questions at the end of each chapter.

Application (35%)

1-3 pages of questions that require some interpretation and the selection of proper tools for the solution.  These are often word problems which require a formal concluding statement answering the original question.  For most textbooks, these would be represented by section 'B' practise questions at the end of each chapter.

Thinking & Inquiry (15%)

1-2 pages of questions that require interpretation and the selection of one or more tools in order to find the solution.  For most textbooks, these would be represented by section 'C' practise questions at the end of each chapter.

Communication (15%)

Each page of your test will be assigned a level based on the quality of your communication.  In general, your communication will be evaluated based upon:

  1. Expression & Organization of Ideas (e.g., layout of solution, quality of explanations, showing sufficient work to justify answers)
  2. Use of Mathematical Conventions & Terminology (e.g., correct use of equal signs, appropriate precision when rounding, graphing conventions)

The total number of pages cannot be specified because it will change based on the density of each question (i.e., a test with many graphs will necessarily use more paper than a test with only algebraic solutions).  Tests are planned to require most of the period, allowing for time to check over the test when complete.
